Jane Jacobs lahir di Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S, 4 Mei 1916, Ia adalah wartawan, penulis, dan aktivis Amerika-Kanada yang terkenal karena pengaruhnya pada studi perkotaan.

Jacobs terkenal dengan buku-bukunya yang kebanyakan bercerita tentang perkotaan, salah satu bukunya yang paling terkenal berjudul "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" yang rillis pada tahun 1961. Buku tersebut bercerita tentang kritik pedas dan penolakan terhadap perencanaan tata kota modern Amerika Serikat.

Dalam buku "The Death and Life of Great American Cities", Jacobs berpendapat bahwa perencanaan kota modernis sama dengan menghancurkan kota, karena menolak manusia hidup dalam masyarakat yang ditandai dengan kompleksitas berlapis dan tampak kacau.
